SHELLAC DISK
FACES

Aprelevsky Works, mid 1930's

In early XIXth century disks were placed into plain envelopes made of cardboard, sometimes with cloth insertions at the edges. Till 1950 envelopes were only utilitarian and were manufactured from wrapping paper and bore simple emblems. Later they also bore artistic impression which was usually similar to that of corresponding label. Special envelopes were issued dedicated to national holidays and jubilee dates.

Even in gloomy 1950s envelopes of the disks were used for advertising. Here you see examples of envelopes for records made by Aprelevsky Works. The last one shows the reverse of all the envelopes shown here. In most cases advertising was that of services rendered by Savings Bank subsidiaries, sometimes one could come across ads of consumer goods.
